If you are thinking about replacing your old AC system or installing a new one, it is worthwhile considering a unit that is eligible for an Xcel Energy rebate. Depending on what type of system you go with and whether or not you have an old system to trade-in, you could be able to collect up to $1000 or more in rebates.

All things considered, with the prospect of the Xcel rebate as well as having a money-saving, energy-efficient AC system, there has never been a better time to consider installing central air.

How to get the highest possible Xcel rebate

In order to qualify for the Xcel rebate, the following criteria must be met:
  • The location at which the unit will be installed must be located in Colorado
  • The installation must be done by a qualified professional
  • The installing contractor must be registered as a participant in the Xcel program

SEER Ratings: what are they and how do they affect my rebate?

Other factors that may affect the amount of rebate you are eligible for include the SEER rating of the new unit and whether the unit you are replacing is serviceable or not.

A SEER rating is a way to measure energy efficiency in a heating or cooling unit. SEER stands for seasonal energy efficiency ratio and is part of the broader standards of HVAC equipment in general.

Without getting into a great amount of detail about the different SEER ratings and what they mean, let’s just say that each and every AC unit on the market has one. The higher the number, the more efficient and energy-sparing the unit is.

As far as the Xcel Rebate goes, the higher the SEER rating of your new unit is, the more money you will be eligible to collect in rebates.

The SEER rating of the unit you are replacing also has an impact. To qualify for the maximum trade-in rebate, the unit on the way out must have a SEER rating of 12 or less and it must be fully functioning or at least repairable for a maximum of $1500.

For instance, if your new unit has a SEER rating under 15 (representing standard efficiency) you would be able to get a rebate of $100. The amounts go up incrementally to a maximum of $650 for a new 17+ SEER system. If you are replacing an old system with a unit that is rated 14.5 SEER or higher, you can also collect an additional $500 rebate on the trade-in. The maximum rebate you can collect under the Xcel program is $1150.
