When it comes to saving money on heating bills, it can sometimes be difficult finding just the right methods. There are a number of ways to decrease the amount of energy spent heating your home. While many are worthwhile, some are certainly better than others.

At Summit Heating & A/C we’ve spent years providing heating services to Denver and the surrounding areas. The following are some of our favorite heating tips for saving energy.

A Lower Thermostat Setting

It is possible to save a significant amount of heating energy for every degree lowered in a 24-hour cycle. Use a programmable thermostat and set the daytime temperature to 68 and the nighttime temperature to 55.

While there is a common misconception that it takes less energy to maintain a constant temperature, it actually takes less energy to heat a cold room than to keep the room at a higher temperature. If you just wear a little extra clothing for warmth, you’ll be pleased with the savings at the end of the month.

Seal Air Leaks Around the House

There are many areas where your house might be leaking air, but some of the most common places are around chimneys, vents, windows, and doors. Keeping the chimney flue open when the chimney is not in use is like having an open window to the outdoors, letting warm air escape, and allowing cold air entry.

If the dryer vent does not close properly, air can escape through the opening. Check your windows and doors to see if there is any air flowing in or out. If there is, apply some type of sealant around the perimeters.

Other problem areas can be where any wires or pipes are entering the house. Check the pipes and wires to see if any air is escaping through the gaps. Utilizing heating maintenance services from the expert technicians at Summit Heating & A/C is an excellent way to ensure that a heating system is running properly.

Adding Insulation

Adding insulation is one of the best ways to keep warm air in and cold air out. The initial cost of the insulation will be paid for quickly in terms of energy savings. Adding insulation to the attic, the basement, and around the ducts can lead to great energy savings.
